Risk of Currency Fluctuations & Refund Losses
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly. If a merchant charges in a different currency and later needs to process a refund, they could lose money if the exchange rate has shifted unfavourably. For example, if a merchant sells in EUR but operates in USD, and the EUR strengthens by the time of a refund, the merchant will lose money on the conversion.
Complex Accounting & Reporting
Handling transactions in multiple currencies adds complexity to accounting, tax reporting, and reconciliation. Merchants would need to track conversions, account for exchange rate differences, and manage fluctuating revenues in their base currency.
Higher Transaction Costs & Fraud Risks
Many payment gateways charge additional fees for processing multi-currency transactions. International transactions also carry a higher risk of fraud and chargebacks, increasing potential liabilities for merchants.
That said, currency conversion is generally not an issue for you as a customer as most banks store multiple currencies and don’t typically charge additional fees to customers for paying in a foreign currency.
